Description
Chateau Cos d’Estournel has a long and distinguished history as a Bordeaux wine property in the St. Estephe appellation. Louis Gaspard d’Estournel, gave his name to the estate after founding in 1811. The property is adjacent to Château Lafite-Rothschild in the neighboring commune of Pauillac.
Chateau Cos d’Estournel was one of the first Bordeaux chateaux to bottle, label and sell their own wine. This practice continued until the death of Louis Gaspard d’Estournel in 1852. It did not take more than a few years before Chateau Cos d’Estournel became famous with wine lovers and royalty all over the world. The wines, too, are distinctive. A mix of elegance and power with a slightly exotic edge, they are among the best that can be found in Bordeaux today.
Tasting Notes
The 2001 Cos d’Estournel is blended of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot—a very high percentage of Merlot in this vintage and a very late harvest, which started on October 1st. Deep garnet in color, the nose is singing with savory notes of smoked meats, tapenade, bay leaves and beef drippings with a core of plum preserves, redcurrant jelly, dried cherries and baked blackcurrants with wafts of peppermint tea and dried roses. Medium-bodied, the palate practically tingles with vibrant dried herbs, red fruit preserves and minty notes, structured with firm, finely grained tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing very long and minerally.
