The wines of Château Villars owe their personality to soils of clay and limestone. While the clay lends them their power and depth, the limestone does a great job of regulating the water supply available to the vine.In the nose, Château Villars shows great freshness, floral or fruity depending on the year, and a touch of spices. On the palate it unfolds into powerfully crafted, very elegant tannins. This wine gains in complexity as it ages and can be kept in the cellar for 10 to 20 years depending on the vintage.
A terrific wine from proprietor Thierry Gaudrie, this wine, which has a similar blend to the La Vieille Cure (73% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon), has an inky purple color and a big, sweet kiss of blueberry liqueur intermixed with creme de cassis, camphor, licorice and a hint of graphite. Full-bodied, rich and unctuously textured, this is a seriously endowed Fronsac to drink over the next 15+ years.
