Established in 1691 by M. Jodocus CISLE (former name of Zusslin), Domaine Valentin ZUSSLIN is now run by two generations of the Zusslin family who are following in the footsteps of their forbears. The winery is based in Orschwihr, south of Colmar, and the vines are planted on the slopes of the Bollenberg, Clos Liebenberg and Grand Cru Pfingstberg. Since 1997, the state has been run in its entirety according to the principles of Bio-Dynamic culture. The vines are mainly worked by hand and a significant amount of time is devoted to caring for the soil!
The 2013 Riesling Clos Liebenberg Monopole shows a beautifully intense nose with really ripe and concentrated, but also natural Riesling flavors intermixed with lovely stony and smoky notes that give a nice purity. Full-bodied and with a creamy but lively texture, the Liebenberg reveals a great finesse and elegance, as well as firm mineral and tannic structure. The wine reveals a great vitality, piquancy and vibrancy combined with intensity, ripeness and a seductive, well-concentrated fruit. The finish is very long, pure and salty, underlining the remarkable elegance and persistence of this terraced monopole, which is in fact the extension of the Grand Cru Pfingstberg but a cooler terroir with southeast exposition. Stewed stone fruit flavors in the long and aromatic aftertaste.[92+Points, Stephan Reinhardt – February, 2017 – robertparker.com]
