In tuning into this marvellous spectacle of intimacy, which the vine naturally cultivates with its cosmic-telluric environment, one cannot help but think of the men who accompany and encourage it in a mutual quest for perfection. Today they are still reaping the wisdom of their ancestors, who provided them not only with soils scintillating with vitality, but with plants carefully selected and adapted to the subtlety of each parcel over generations.
Clos des Epeneaux is one of the 10 largest premier or grand cru monopolies of the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. Although situated in the heart of the Grands and Petits Epeneaux, this parcel has a fairly different geology from its neighbours. Both powerful and refined, the resulting wines are the quintessence of what Pinot Noir can express. The hint of spices is also characteristic of Clos des Epeneaux.
The 2015 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux is fabulous, wafting from the glass with notes of wild berries, orange peel, cinnamon, rich soil and espresso. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with a lovely line of bright acidity, fine-grained tannins, sappy energy, and terrific depth and tension at the core. This is a great Clos des Epeneaux from Paul Zinetti. [95 Points, William Kelley – October 2017, robertparker.com]
