Description
It is no coincidence Famille Perrin is the leading organic wine grower of the Southern Rhône Valley where they occupy the region’s best terroirs. Their values have given them a worldwide reputation for excellence: absolute respect for the soil, a commitment to manual methods and a deep belief that organic viticulture is the only way to express the true essence of the terroir. Moreover the combination of talents within the family ensures the continuation of their unique expertise. Nature and tradition are key to the Famille Perrin way and this approach has continued seamlessly over five generations.
The “Domaine des Tourelles” is located at the foot of the village of Gigondas. The vineyard is orientated north west and enjoys a cool microclimate which allows late harvests. Formed of 10 hectares of Grenache (80%), Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvèdre, the vineyard of Les Tourelles is located on limestone and sandy soils that are outstanding in the “Clos”, a locality planted in old Grenache vines directly next to the estate and the village of Gigondas.
Tasting Notes
With the Grenache yields down by one-fourth this year, the 2018 Gigondas Clos des Tourelles is only 65% Grenache, with the balance a blend of Mourvèdre and Syrah. Aged in concrete and foudre, it offers up hints of leather and cherries on the nose. It’s full-bodied, more robust and sturdier than the L’Argnée yet almost as silky and elegant on the extended finish. [93-95 Points, Joe Czerwinski – August 2019, robertparker.com]
