Description
Pol Roger, founded in 1849 in Épernay, is one of Champagne’s most respected houses, known for its elegance, balance, and deep ties to Britain. Still family-owned, Pol Roger has long been admired for producing wines that embody finesse and richness in equal measure. Its relationship with the United Kingdom dates back to the 19th century when it received a royal warrant in 1877, but it was in the 20th century that this connection reached legendary status — through Sir Winston Churchill.
Pol Roger champagnes are distinguished by their elegance, subtlety, and harmonious balance. Great attention is paid to the highest quality grapes and the meticulous winemaking process, aiming to create refined and complex champagnes.Pol Roger non-vintage champagnes are usually aged for at least three years, while vintage and prestige cuvée are aged even longer, thus gaining even more subtle nuances and elegance. Pol Roger champagnes can be enjoyed both in their youth and after they have matured.
Tasting Notes
Pol Roger’s vintage rosé is the finest I have tasted in recent years from the superlative 2019 vintage. It’s deeply expressive of Pinot Noir fruit in its typically deep colour, yet immaculately composed in length, freshness and structure. There’s some opulence of fruit in juicy cherry, raspberry and pomegranate, forward and ripe but never over-sweet or broad, yet it is cut with gentle bitter herbs, violet, pepper complexity and plumped up by a subtle creamy depth. While still carrying some of the slightly jumpy energy of youth, this will settle into an immaculate vintage rosé with even one further year on cork.
