Description
With very ancient origins, the Château Clos René was formerly named “Reney” on the map of the engineer-geographer Pierre de Belleyme. The château has been in the hands of the same family for several generations. It is now managed by Jean-Marie Garde. The Clos René vineyard is located on the western slope of the Pomerol plateau. With an average age of 35 years, the vineyard of Château Clos René extends over 15 hectares. The vines are planted on gravel and ancient sands dating from the Quaternary period, resting on iron slag subsoils. The vineyard is mainly composed of merlot (70%), cabernet franc (20%) and malbec (10%).The vinification of Château Clos René is carried out in thermoregulated cement vats. The wine undergoes aging in oak barrels for 18 months, of which 30% is new wood renewed each year. Fining with fresh egg whites.
Tasting Notes
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Clos Rene charges out of the glass with gregarious scents of freshly crushed blackberries, plum preserves and wild blueberries with hints of hoisin, moss-covered tree bark and black truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has bags of vivacity, with an interesting interplay of fresh, crunchy black fruit and blue fruit preserves. Framed by ripe rounded tannins and bold freshness, it finishes on a lingering peppery note.
